Cooking for kids can be extra challenging because a lot of them are picky eaters, so be sure to stick to a menu that they are familiar with. Prepare classic grill recipes with a twist for added fun!

Here are some fun and easy barbecue recipes that kids will surely love:

Sweet Barbecue Chicken

Who doesn’t love a classic dish of grilled chicken? Children will love this sweet and simple recipe especially with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy.

What you need:

  • 1 1/4 kg. bone-in, skin-on chicken pieces
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 tbsps. distilled water

For the barbecue sauce:

  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup sweetened pineapple juice
  • 2 tbsps. white vinegar
  • 2 tbsps. cornstarch (dissolved in 2 tbsps. water)
  • 2 tsps. toasted sesame seeds

Place soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic and water in a large resealable plastic bag. Add in chicken pieces, seal then turn to coat evenly. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours to overnight. To make the sauce, combine garlic, soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple juice and vinegar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Lower the heat and cook for another 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add in cornstarch mixture and cook for another minute until sauce has thickened. Divide the sauce into 2 small bowls. When chicken is ready, remove from bag and discard excess marinade. Cook chicken in a pre-heated grill (350 degrees Celsius) skin side down for 5 minutes per side or until grill marks appear. Brush with sweet sauce and cook for 5-7 minutes per side or until cooked through. Transfer on a serving plate, sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with the remaining bowl of sweet sauce.

Butter-Cinnamon Fruit Skewers

Add a little nutrition to your kids’ barbecue menu. They will surely enjoy this healthy and colorful treat!

What you need:

  • 2 apples
  • 2 peaches
  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 pineapple
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • Bamboo skewers

Peel all fruits, core apples and pineapple. Cut each fruit into 1-inch pieces. Thread onto skewers alternately. In a small bowl, mix butter, cinnamon and sugar. Brush the fruits with butter mixture then cook in a pre-heated grill for about 8 minutes or until glazed and slightly tender. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Choco Peanut Grilled Sandwiches

Serve this filling treat either as an appetizer or dessert. You can even ask for help from the kids in making this incredibly easy grill recipe!

What you need:

  • 2 slices white bread
  • 2 tbsps. miniature chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 tbsps. peanut butter
  • 2 tsps. margarine

Spread margarine on one side of a bread slice. Spread the other half with peanut butter then sprinkle with chocolate chips. Spread one side of the other bread slice with margarine then place it on top (margarine side down) of the peanut butter side of the other bread slice. Place on a grill pan and cook over medium heat for 2-3 minutes or slightly golden brown. Cut in half and allow to cool before serving.
