Released in March 2010, the Samsung Galaxy S caused quite a stir in the smartphone arena, and remains one of the most competitive handsets today, squaring up to the likes of the HTC Desire and Apple iPhone 4.

Its popularity is based largely on its spec list. Whilst the features of this handset are by no means groundbreaking, it does however tick all the boxes, with some of the most up to date technology available all rolled into this great looking Smartphone.

Whether you are a social networker, multimedia enthusiast or a busy professional who likes to say productive out of the office, the chances are the Samsung Galaxy S could prove the ideal smartphone for you.

The social hub feature is great for social networkers as it combines Facebook and Twitter feeds. In order to store music collection, along with photos and videos there is a generous 8 GB of internal storage provided as standard (although a 16 GB version is available). Should further storage be required, there is an integrated microSD slot which can accommodate a memory card of up to 32 GB. In order to play back your media files, there is a versatile multimedia player which supports numerous music and video file formats such as MP3 and MP4 etc. Picasa integration also allows users to directly upload their photos taken on their camera for the popular social media site.

The 5 mega pixel digital camera operates at 2592x 1944 pixels, resulting in superb quality still images. A number of extras such as effects and editing modes are included alongside image enhancing features such as touch focus, Autofocus and face & smile detection. The Samsung Galaxy S is also one of the first smartphones to boast the ability to shoot HD video footage in 720p quality.

As well as a powerful multimedia device, the Samsung Galaxy S also makes a great productivity companion for the workplace. A document editor is included, which allows users to view and edit Microsoft Office and PDF documents. Additionally, there is an organiser and voice memo recorder.

Being an Android powered Smartphone (v2.1, Eclair) the full package of Google features is included, consisting of Google search, Maps, Google Talk and Gmail. Although the handset comes with v2.1 of the operating system installed, users are easily able to upgrade to later versions such as the recently released 2.2 Froyo and upcoming 2.3 Gingerbread.

As you may expect, an impressive internet browsing experience is provided and this is courtesy of 3G coverage (via HSDPA) and Wi-Fi where available.

The handset itself looks great, and is not dissimilar to the iPhone 3G. A 4 inch super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen dominates the front of the handset, providing amazing display quality. It is also one of the thinnest phones available, making it unobtrusive to carry in your pocket or handbag.

So there you have it; stunning aesthetics combined with an advanced spec list means the Samsung Galaxy S is the ideal smartphone for so many types of user, and explains its popularity, and the fact it remains a sought after device.
