The Best Point Guards of the Last 30 Years

Many believe that a great basketball franchise starts with its point guard. After all, the man running the show coordinates just about every offensive drive up the court. A good ball handler and a great passer can create instant offense on any team, and some point guards can defend the ball just as ably too.

Let’s take a look at the best 5 point guards of the last 25 years. This is a tough list to narrow it down and while the ordering may be subject to opinion, I believe that just about anyone would agree that all of these competitors are some of the best to ever play the game.

5. Steve Nash. At 35 years old, he’s seemingly as good as he’s ever been. Having won two MVP awards, both after the age of 30, Nash has established himself as one of the game’s greats.

4. Chris Paul. CP3 continues to get better with each year, and he could easily find his way higher up on the list when all is said and done. He’s one of the best defenders at the position to ever play the game, and a shoe in to be near the top of the league in assists each year.

3. Jason Kidd. The triple double king of our generation and one of the best to ever handle the basketball, Kidd is a modern day Oscar Robertson with his unique ability to pass and rebound from the point guard position.

2. John Stockton. The all-time assists leader has to be on this list. Wonder why the Jazz made the playoffs for nearly 20 years straight, all the way until Stockton was over 40 years old? It was the combo of this phenom and Karl Malone.

1. Magic Johnson. Ervin Magic Johnson led the Lakers to multiple championships and most people credit this all to him. His ability to pass like few others did, rebound, and score the ball with ease made him one of the most versatile to ever play the position and one of the greatest to ever play.
